Hopes for the realisation of a more inclusive and equitable society for women in Enugu State has heightened as stakeholders, at the weekend, concluded work on the policy document.

To enhance women’s participation in the economy, the Enugu State government, in collaboration with the South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO) and development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) had, in July this year, inaugurated a technical working group for the domestication of the National  Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) policy in the state.

This is to ensure the development of a policy that captures the realities of women in Enugu State across key sectors, such as education, healthcare, agriculture and business, among others.

At a two-day validation workshop of stakeholders called to review the draft policy, Executive Director, SSDO, Dr. Stanley Ilechukwu, stated that the overall aim was to set how the state government and its partners would support women empowerment in the state.

He stated that the validation exercise would not only strengthen the policy but also ensure that it is aligned with realities on the ground.

Explaining that women’s empowerment has become a very big priority for the government, he stated that there would not be meaningful development in any society that had not reckoned with the welfare of women.

“Before now, there was no such policy in the state. Before now empowerment had never been. Now it is written down and we will use what is written to ask the government questions about women. We can now hold someone responsible for women’s participation in the affairs of the state with this document,” he stated.
