Former governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Chief Ike Oligbo, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to rise above intimidation and fast-track the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

In a statement issued to journalists in Awka on Tuesday, Oligbo noted that this appeal comes at a time when Nigeria is facing significant economic hardship and increasing insecurity, particularly in the southeastern region of the country.

He warned that Kanu’s three years of detention could further destabilise the nation.

Oligbo said that the eastern region often feels marginalised within the Nigerian political framework, and keeping Kanu in detention only deepens feelings of resentment and alienation among the youth.

He stated, “The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu serves no purpose other than to foster resentment and anger, especially among the younger generation in Eastern Nigeria.

“The Federal Government must rise above intimidation and disregard threats concerning Kanu’s release. Justice demands fairness, and the charges against Kanu have proven difficult to substantiate. Keeping him detained any longer is unwarranted and unjust.”

He also noted the severe economic situation in the country, pointing out that millions of Nigerians are enduring immense hardships due to inflation and a declining economy.

He argued that now is not the time for political manoeuvring, especially regarding a sensitive issue like Kanu’s welfare and national unity.

“Amidst the current economic difficulties, this is not the time to play politics with people’s lives. The government needs to demonstrate leadership by taking decisive actions that prioritise national unity and progress. Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is a step toward healing and reconciliation,” Oligbo concluded.
