Flood displaces Delta citizens, destroys multi-million property

Properties worth millions of naira have been lost as flood displaced residents in various communities in Delta State. The Guardian gathered that no life, was, however, lost to the flooding, but those displaced have moved upland to seek refuge.
Communities mostly affected by the flood are Burutu, Bomadi, Patani, parts of Ughelli metropolis, Ote-Owelle, Agidiase quarters in Ogwashi Uku and parts of Asaba, the state capital. Residents of Ote-Owelle, Agidiase quarters in Ogwashi-Uku community had raised raise the alarm rainy season set in, considering the dangers posed by shallow burrow pit dug to contain flood in the area.
Speaking on the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Festus Ahon, said government has advised residents in flood prone areas to move upland for safety.
Ahon added: “Government is trying to clear drainages and canals to allow free flow of water towards reducing the flood level.”
The state government, according to him, is considering opening more IDP camps to alleviate the sufferings the people. A resident of Ote-Owelle, Mr. Lawrence Okafor, told journalists the community suffers the same fate yearly. He said: “The burrow pit is flooded so much that the water surges from it and overflows the whole area, most buildings are seriously threatened by flood that from the pit.”
