Not fewer than four persons have been reported dead in boat mishap in Lafia East local government of Nasarawa State on Thursday.

The unfortunate incident happened when the said boat was conveying some farmers with their goods from Alogani village to the popular Ashangwa market.

The shocking death of a male and three females threw the community into mourning.

Abdulhamid Sale, an eyewitness lamented that the passengers were left with no option but to use the boat due lack of link roads between communities.

He added that the boat sunk due to overloading with 25 people, four Motorcycles and four bags of melon on board.

“The tragedy is disheartening and regrettable, considering the terrain with which only boats are used as the only means of transportation. The government should help us with good roads that will help us move our farm produce to nearby markets.

“If we have good road, nobody will want to risk his or her life and goods to board a boat”, he lamented.

The Overseer of Lafia East Development Area, Barrister Haruna Muhammed said the authorities are aware of the tragedy and investigation is ongoing to ascertain its immediate causes.

He however disclosed that they have employed the services of some experienced fishermen to recover the remaining bodies and property
