How oil pulling can transform your dental health By Adenike Baderin
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that dates back 5,000 years. It is the process of using natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, or sesame oil to improve the health of your oral health.
Most of us tend to neglect our oral health until an infection cavity develops. Oil pulling is believed to have numerous health benefits, including whitening the teeth, freshening the breath, and improving overall oral health. Here is how oil pulling works:
Many medical medical practitioners recommend coconut oil because of its antimicrobial properties. But sesame oil and olive oil can be used as well. Take approximately a tablespoon of your preferred oil and swish it in your mouth for an extended period. It is important to also pay attention to your molars and your gums.
To prevent the taste of oil when brushing with toothpaste, use a separate toothbrush. After swishing, spit out the oil into a trash or container — do not spit into a sink or toilet because it hardens later on, which can cause plumbing issues.
Additionally, beginners should incorporate oil pulling into their morning or evening routine, rather than doing it randomly. This is because oil pulling is most effective when done on an empty stomach. It’s also best to oil pull before brushing or flossing of any kind.
