HURIWA begs Tinubu to rename INEC secretariat after Akeredolu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been asked to rename the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Secretariat in the nation’s capital after the late Ondo State Governor, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN.
Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA), while condoling with the good people of Ondo State over the death of their governor, said the late governor, will all times be remembered as a hero of democracy and equity.
The group, in the same vein, admonished Nigerian politicians to draw a philosophical lesson from the earthly departure of the legal colossus and avoid unleashing hardship, corruption, and misgovernance on the citizens whilst they hold public offices of divergent colouration.
HURIWA said irrespective of the inexplicable bad and toxic politics orchestrated by loyalists of the late governor who frustrated the enforcement of the constitutional process of transition of power to the then deputy governor, the departed governor of Ondo State will be remembered as an icon of democracy who worked tirelessly to ensure that power came back to South.
Huriwa further stated that the immediate political affiliates and family members of the late governor of Ondo State mismanaged the political situation before the physical departure of the governor by concealing his true health conditions and by fostering a situation of near breakdown of law and order in Ondo State by choreographing the failure to hand over power to the then deputy governor Mr. Goodluck Aiyedetiwa.
The group stated that it take the unconstitutional intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the proper process of making the then Deputy governor of Akeredolu to act as the governor whilst the late governor tackles his health challenges.
“HURIWA wants the political class in Nigeria to learn positive and constructive lesson that nothing and no position lasts forever just as the politicians must accept their individual and collective responsibility to abide by the rule of law and by the tenets and provisions of the constitution even as the Rights group has asked the new governor of Ondo State to set up an investigative commission to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the groundswell of allegations that certain persons connected to the late governor did forged his signature and withdrew humonguous amount of State funds which they never accounted.
“HURIWA recalled that late Akeredolu died on Wednesday after a prolonged illness just as he was born on July 21, 1956, Akeredolu attended Aquinas College Akure and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.
He was Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997-1999.
“He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1998. Akeredolu was president of Nigeria Bar Association from 2008 to 2010.”
