Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned campaigns of calumny mounted against the former governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, by powerful political forces concerning his integrity and reputation.

The group lamented that the intention of fabricating false scandals and strategic media campaign launched to tarnish the image of Ugwuanyi are motivated by ulterior motives.

Addressing the media on Wednesday in Abuja, National coordinator of the group, Emmanuel Onwubiko, extolled Ugwuanyi’s commitment to good governance, infrastructural development, healthcare, and education in the state, which has left a lasting positive impact on the lives of the people.
According to him, the former governor’s leadership was marked by transparency, inclusiveness, and a deep dedication to the welfare of the citizens.

He said: “Ugwuanyi made significant promises to the people of Enugu State, and he lived up to many of them. For instance, he promised to open Nsukka, the university town where the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is situated.

“True to his words, he embarked on several development projects for the university town. The Opi-Nsukka Road and the construction of a secretariat annex at Edeoballa to house state civil servants working in the Enugu North senatorial zone are just a few examples.

“The former governor also built a magnificent sports stadium at Nsukka to encourage sports activities in the region. Furthermore, he established a brand new University of Medical and Applied Sciences in Igboano, Enugu North Senatorial Zone, showing his commitment to education and healthcare.

“His development efforts extended beyond Nsukka, encompassing the other two senatorial zones of Enugu East and Enugu West. Notably, he expanded and rehabilitated the Ngwo-9th Mile Road, known as Miliken Hill, which had been neglected for years. He also relocated the Building Material/Electrical Parts Market near Kenyatta, reducing traffic congestion and improving the living conditions of traders and wayfarers.

“In the realm of infrastructure, Governor Ugwuanyi dualized the road from Emene to Nike Lake Resort Hotel, easing traffic gridlock and enhancing connectivity.

“However, despite these significant achievements, there are some who still question the extent of Governor Ugwuanyi’s contributions to the state. It’s worth noting that no government can meet all the diverse needs and expectations of its citizens. Nevertheless, the accomplishments of his administration are undeniable.”
HURIWA added that Ugwuanyi was also worker-friendly, ensuring the prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements to civil servants.

“The organised labour praised his administration for approving the minimum wage, promotions, and extending the service years of teachers. He even provided housing accommodation for civil servants in Elim Estate.

“These accomplishments were acknowledged by various voices. including former junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia, and members of the opposition party, like Dr. Ben Nwoye, who noted that the governor’s media aides could have done more to showcase his achievements.

“Therefore, these sinister plots and politically motivated allegations against him are not only baseless , but also part of a deliberate effort by certain individuals to tarnish his image.

“We believe that these individuals are acting out of self-interest and fear that Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may be considered for a significant political appointment from President Tinubu. Their actions are driven by partisan politics and a desire to undermine a public servant who has earned the trust and respect of the people of Enugu State.

“HURIWA stands for the protection of human rights, justice, and the rule of law. We believe in transparency and accountability, and we call on all stakeholders, including the media, civil society organisations, and the public, to critically evaluate the information being disseminated by these individuals and their motives.

“We want to emphasise that every Nigerian is entitled to a fair and unbiased assessment of their character and conduct and that public figures like Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi should not be unfairly maligned or subjected to unwarranted character assassination.

“We urge the public to exercise discernment and critical thinking when faced with sensational and unverified claims against public figures. We also call on those engaging in this malicious campaign to reconsider their actions and focus on constructive dialogue and debate, rather than seeking to undermine the reputation of an individual who has dedicated himself to public service,” the group added.
