Impeached Obasa absent as Meranda takes charge of Lagos Assembly
Mojisola Meranda presided over her first plenary session as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday, marking a historic moment as the Assembly’s first female leader.
Her emergence followed the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was ousted earlier in the week amid allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.
Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency 1, was reportedly on vacation in Atlanta, United States, and did not attend the session. He has yet to respond to the allegations.

The plenary, which commenced at 11 a.m., recorded significant attendance by lawmakers representing various constituencies.
Addressing the assembly, Meranda pledged to prioritise transparency and good governance in her leadership. “I will work tirelessly to uphold the principles of transparency, good governance, and other noble tenets that this House stands for,” she stated.
During the session, Meranda announced the new principal officers of the House, signalling a shift in the assembly’s leadership dynamics.
