Initiative empowers girls in Bauchi
Selected adolescent girls in Bauchi State have been trained in make-over, event planning and interior decoration by Alwadata Lifeline Initiative.
Chairman of the non-governmental organisation, Winifred Yusuf, said the empowerment was targeted at equipping girls against the challenges of unemployment that have pushed many into prostitution and sexual violence.
She made this known at the graduation of some participants, yesterday, at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi. Yusuf said the initiative was largely supported by the Development Exchange Centre (DEC) to empower the spinsters.
Executive Director (DEC), Helen Abba, said her organisation firmly believes in education, skill development and particularly equal access for all.
DEC’s partnership with Alwadata, according to her, is a perfect example of how organisations should collaborate to bring about quality change in the society to impact the lives of marginalised people.
“In this project, we have seen transformative effect. It brings a sense of empowerment and independence. These graduands will positively assist their families and their communities,” she said.
The 20 graduands, who were given starter packs and certificates, pledged to utilise the training and kits for self-reliance.
