The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has called on the Federal Government to extend peace accord initiatives across Nigeria, citing their success in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State. This call comes as the region, which had endured over two decades of insecurity, now sees a significant shift toward peace following a hard-won reconciliation.

In a statement issued by BEPU Chairman, Dr. Isah Muhammad Galadima, the union expressed gratitude for the peace accord in Birnin Gwari and highlighted its potential for broader national impact.

The union credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to tackling security challenges for facilitating this breakthrough.

“We urge the Federal Government to expand the peace initiatives to other states struggling with banditry, including Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto,” Galadima said. “This will strengthen the gains made in Kaduna and foster national reconciliation.”

BEPU also called for urgent attention to developmental needs in Birnin Gwari, particularly infrastructural restoration. Galadima said the need to repair critical highways such as Birnin Gwari to Kaduna, Birnin Gwari to Funtua, and Birnin Gwari to Tegina, which are crucial for economic recovery and trade facilitation.

Additionally, the union requested the reinstatement of communication networks in the area, where services have been absent for five years, and the return of financial institutions like Ecobank and FirstBank, whose absence has stifled the region’s economic activities.

Highlighting Birnin Gwari’s agricultural potential, BEPU called for the establishment of a Federal University of Agriculture to harness the region’s vast arable land for agricultural development and research.

Galadima further appealed to the Kaduna State Government to support the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and ensure their safe reintegration.

“The resettlement process should include housing, basic amenities, and support for the displaced residents,” he added.

Acknowledging the efforts of the Federal and Kaduna State Governments, BEPU also expressed its gratitude to the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Malam Zubair Jibril Mai Gwari II, and the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Salisu Isah, for their leadership in the peace process.

The union also recognised the instrumental role of the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and commended the security forces, including the Army and Airforce, for their professionalism in restoring peace.

BEPU reiterated its commitment to continuing its support for the peace initiative and urged the people of Birnin Gwari to contribute positively to sustaining peace and fostering development in the region.
