IPC condemns arrest of journalist
THE International Press Center (IPC) has condemned the arrest and continued detention of a Lagos-based Camerounian journalist, Simon Ateba, by his country’s authorities since last Friday.
According IPC, the journalist was arrested as he was investigating the conditions of Nigerian refugees camped in far north Cameroun.
In a statement yesterday, IPC Director, Lanre Arogundade, noted that there was nothing wrong if a journalist investigates the ordeals and sufferings of Nigerians who fled into Cameroun when their communities came under sustained attacks from the Boko Haram Islamist terrorists.
“However, if the authorities feel he has contravened the laws of the country, he should be charged to court or otherwise be released immediately,” he added.
