Palestinian Ambassador in Nigeria, Abu Shawesh, has said his country is waiting on the government of Nigeria to use its political networks to assist the people of Palestine.

Noting that the Palestinian people have full right to self-determination, the envoy revealed that about 6,504 Palestinian, 70 per cent of them children, women and elderly, have died since the war between Israel and Gaza began.

Addressing journalists at a press conference organised by Justice for Palestinian Coalition (JUPAC) in Abuja, yesterday, Shawesh said about 1,800 civilians have so far sustained various levels of injuries, and that internally displaced persons in the Gaza Strip have grown to 1.4 million.

“We are still looking for Nigeria to play a crucial and strong role, according to its political weight in Africa and around the globe,” he said.

While decrying propaganda against his people, Shawesh said unjustified campaign launched by Israeli leaders against the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, for saying the truth about what is happening in Gaza was unfortunate.

He added: “It is unfortunate that we have all witnessed and are still witnessing the unprecedented pilgrimage of some pro-Israel Western leaders to provide full military and political support for the current genocide and use extremely unbalanced language in commenting on the ongoing war against Palestinians, giving the Israeli occupation the green light to commit more massacres. This, for sure, will raise the number of innocent people to be killed in the upcoming days, increase the mass destruction of Palestinian homes and infrastructure, and deepen Palestinian human suffering.”
