Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hailed a former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as a pivotal mentor in his life and political career.

Speaking at a service of songs held at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja on Friday, Jonathan shared fond memories of Iwuanyanwu, who he regarded as a father figure long before his tenure as Bayelsa’s Deputy Governor.

During the tribute, Jonathan reflected on the significant support and goodwill Iwuanyanwu extended to him throughout his journey in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and during his presidency.

He recounted how Iwuanyanwu would often organise private prayer sessions for him during turbulent times in his administration or national crises.

“He took me as a son even before I became Deputy Governor in Bayelsa and mentored me to the time I became president,” Jonathan stated.

He stressed that the gathering was not just for mourning but to celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy of meritorious service to both community and country. He noted that Iwuanyanwu lived beyond the biblical lifespan of three scores and ten, remaining an active politician and a dear figure to him.

Jonathan urged politicians and Nigerians to focus on doing the right things to improve society and to create lasting legacies that will be remembered after their passing.

Former Imo State Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, who also attended the event, described Iwuanyanwu as a remarkable mentor to many politicians, commending his exemplary life and the impact he made both locally and internationally.

The event was attended by notable figures, including former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, Ken Nnamani, Anyim Pius Anyim, former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and Imo State’s Deputy Governor, as well as senior clerics, diplomats, and other dignitaries.

Chief Iwuanyanwu was a prominent civil engineer, chairman of Hardel and Enic Ltd, founder of Champion Newspapers, and held various leadership roles in sports and aviation. He received numerous accolades, including the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), and was honoured with the traditional title of Ahaejiagamba of Ndigbo. He passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 81, survived by his second wife, Frances, and seven children.
