Governor Nasiru Idris, yesterday, signed the minimum wage of N75,000 for Kebbi State workers into law. Consequently, he gave the Ministry of Finance 72 hours to commence payment effective from this month’s salary.

The governor, who received the reports of the minimum wage committee, headed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Yakubu Bala Tafida, said he decided that the panel should work out modalities for the payment and come up with a reasonable and acceptable amount.

“To the glory of God, the committee worked round the clock and came up with N72,000, N73,000, and N75,000. I want to say that I used my discretion to choose N75,000 as the minimum wage payable to the state workers, which we are witnessing the signing of into law today,” he said.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the signing, the Accountant-General, Muhammadu Bello Ibrahim, promised that the ministry would honour the governor’s directive.  He urged the workers to redouble their efforts in ensuring productivity and fulfilling the confidence the governor had in them.

In a statement, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, who witnessed the occasion, charged other governors to emulate their Kebbi counterparts.

ALSO yesterday, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State announced a N80,000 new minimum wage for all workers. This, he announced in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information.

To ensure a smooth rollout of the policy, the governor has also constituted an implementation committee, which has been given one month to deliver its report on how the wage increase would be executed.

The panel is chaired by the Head of the Civil Service, Effiong Essien.

Other members of the committee are the Chairman, State Civil Service Commission, Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, and the leadership of labour unions such as the NLC and TUC, among others.  The announcement, the commissioner noted, was “reflective of the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its workforce.”
