Stakeholders have been urged to support the Lagos State government in ensuring inclusive and quality well-being for children living with disabilities.

The government, through the Office of Disability Affairs, stated that this will allow the children to be independent and reach their full potential.

Speaking at the 2024 celebration of Special Needs Children in Lagos, held on Thursday at Abayomi Finnih Recreational Park, Ikeja, with the theme: “Every Child With Disability Deserves Inclusive and Quality Living,” the General Manager of the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA), Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said that the state is working to ensure inclusivity, where every child with disabilities is catered for in all spheres.

Oyetunde-Lawal explained that the state government, with more emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion, has partnered with relevant organisations and implemented various interventions, policies, and initiatives that align with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

“Our children are our pride, regardless of their disabilities. Their unique needs are to be celebrated, not marginalised. Sadly, many children with disabilities continue to face barriers in accessing education, healthcare, social inclusion, and even basic dignity. These barriers extend beyond the physical; they are societal and attitudinal, stemming from a lack of understanding, prejudice, and a system that too often views these children through the lens of limitation rather than possibility. We must shift this mindset and recognize that they are integral members of our society, deserving of the same rights, opportunities, and respect as any other child.

“You will agree with me that inclusivity is vital to social justice. It challenges stereotypes and prejudices and fosters a more compassionate and empathetic society. When we prioritise inclusivity, we send a powerful message that every individual is valued, and their contributions matter. Inclusivity builds a culture of mutual respect and understanding, where everyone feels empowered to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Social inclusion demands that our communities embrace diversity, challenge stigma, and create accessible spaces and opportunities for all,” she said.

Oyetunde-Lawal promised that the state government will continue to be dedicated to the needs of special children by ensuring they experience unwavering support that will foster an inclusive society where they enjoy the same opportunities as every other child.

The LASODA boss also urged everyone to show empathy and understanding towards people with disabilities and support Lagos State in achieving an inclusive Lagos, where no one is left behind.

Some of the resource persons at the event took turns to enlighten participants on how to best cater to the unique needs of these children.

A psychologist, Mrs. Mabel Okereafor, reminded parents and carers about their emotional well-being and urged stakeholders to continue collaborating and leveraging the strengths of one another by seeking parent support groups to further develop their space.

She also encouraged them to seek adequate training to enhance their knowledge and understanding of how to better manage special children.

A physical therapist from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Mr. Oni Ayo Oluwa, enjoined parents and guardians of special children to remain hopeful and recognise that there is ability in those children with special needs and that their abilities must not be undermined at any time.

Others encouraged parents to make therapy a continuous process by taking advantage of all forms of therapy that can improve their well-being, provide the right education, and pay attention to their needs.

The highlight of the event was the games, dancing, singing sessions, and gift presentations to the children.
