Lagos State government, yesterday, defended the procurement of new Lexus LX 600 bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), worth of N440 million, for the office of the Chief Staff and N7 million fragrance for the office of the governor, among other expenses.

In a statement signed by Director-General, Lagos State Procurement Agency, Fatai Onafowote, it said the expenses were in line with the country’s current economic conditions.

It would be recalled that The Guardian had on Monday reported how the state was caught in fiscal recklessness amid huge legacy debt, while showcasing how the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Hamzat, got N2 billion for the supply of fans, rechargeable lights and fridges, while his wife got N30 million monthly for outreach to indigent Lagosians.

In response, Lagos State government said that while these expenses might be perceived to be exorbitant by the public, it is not out of sync with the current economic conditions of the country.

Onafowote said: “This appears excessive and out-of-tune with both the prevailing circumstances and the people’s mood. It should be scrutinised as to the need and justification for such a vehicle purchase and also value for the money. This is in tandem with current economic realities.

“On the diffuser, this covers the entire period of 2023. It is also not limited to the governor’s office but extends to several offices and state houses.”

The government also said that the accurate sum allocated for rechargeable fans and lights for the office of the deputy governor was N2,017,840.00 in total.

“The contract is for N2,017,840.00 and this is what is contained in the agency’s website as well as the registered letter of awards.”

Onafowote, however, restated the agency’s commitment to transparency, accuracy and accountability in all government transactions.

“We regret that specific details, particularly concerning the descriptions of government dealings, may have inadvertently led to confusion, impacting both governmental entities and corporate partners providing services to the state.

“This arose largely from lack of detailed descriptions in the project information, which has inadvertently led to confusion in the public space.

“We empathise with public concerns and sincerely apologise for any distress caused. We never intend to cast doubt or cause misunderstandings that might tarnish the reputation of respected individuals and organisations involved in these transactions.”
