ECOWAS donates $200,000 worth of relief materials to 1,000 households in Bauchi

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in partnership with the Red Cross Society, Federal Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has donated relief materials worth $200,000 to 1,000 households who suffered flooding last year.

President, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga while speaking on Wednesday during the flag-off distribution, said that floods displaced over 85,000 people, disrupted more than 14,000 households, and left communities grappling with the loss of homes, livelihoods, and, for some, a sense of hope.

“But today, as we launch this distribution, we also gather with a shared purpose—to restore that hope. The Nigerian Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and with generous funding from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is here to offer support to those who need it the most.”

The director of ECOWAS Mission in Nigeria, Mrs. Sintiki Tarfa-Ugbe, said that the state government identified the beneficiaries closer to the people and victims.

Each of the 1,000 affected households went home with 25kg of rice, 15 kg of beans, 15kg of garri, 5 litres of vegetable oil, 5 litres of palm oil, and N75,000 cash transfer.

Also, beneficiaries were given essential non-food items, which include; a mosquito-treated net, blanket, bucket, mat and jerrycan.

Speaking at the event, Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Hammayo noted that the state government had also provided additional support to 150 households to address the growing needs of flood victims.

Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction and the Nigerian Red Cross Society commiserated with the victims and encouraged them to make good use of the assistance provided.
