Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has called for responsible citizenship, particularly in the deployment of information technology tools in the digital age.

Speaking at a Social Media Summit held in Abuja, yesterday, Fagbemi emphasised the need for citizens to exercise caution in their use of social media, noting that while freedom of speech was guaranteed, it must not be abused.

The summit, themed: ‘Harnessing the Power of Social Media for National Development’, brought together leaders, stakeholders, and social media influencers to discuss the role of digital platforms in shaping Nigeria’s future.

Fagbemi noted the growing impact of social media in Nigeria, emphasising that while government had ensured freedom of speech, citizens must use these freedoms judiciously.

He pointed out that platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram had become avenues for youths to showcase talents, drive entrepreneurial ventures and boost the country’s economy.

“Social media is a tool that can make or mar a country,” he noted, stressing that responsible use was key to ensuring that Nigeria continued on the path of growth and development.

Fagbemi hailed the convener, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, for his contributions to the country, and acknowledged his past roles as the Director General of the Nigeria Governors Forum and the PDP Governors Forum.
