Fire guts storey building, consumes valuables in Lagos

A one-storey building in the Alapere area of Lagos State was yesterday engulfed in fire. The fire engulfed the upper floor of the one-storey building, made up of four units of room self-contained apartments. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the ground floor of the building.
The outbreak, which occurred at 16B Agidi Road, Osogun Bus Stop, Alapere, Lagos, started from one of the kitchens of the flats due to an electrical power surge.
It was gathered that the surge caused the fire to spread rapidly to other parts of the apartment, resulting in significant damage to the other apartments.
Following distress calls at about 8:55.a.m, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans(SERP) from the Command and Control Centre, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja to combat the inferno.
No casualties or fatalities were recorded in the incident as the LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service(LSFRS) successfully contained and extinguished the fire and implemented necessary safety precautions to prevent further spread and secondary incidents. Search and rescue operations were conducted to ensure no individuals were trapped.
The affected apartment sustained significant structural and material losses due to the inferno but the lower compartment of the building remained unaffected.
