Bobrisky: HURIWA demands sanctions against corrections officer for alleged perjury
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the National Assembly to sanction Deputy Comptroller of Corrections (DCC) Michael Anugwa.
Anugwa, who oversees the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, allegedly lied under oath during a House of Representatives Committee investigation.
The investigation focused on alleged N15 million bribery allegations involving embattled crossdresser Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky.
Anugwa, who was suspended in connection with the case, downplayed his suspension to the committee, calling it “a mere social media suspension.”
He denied receiving an official suspension letter, claiming he wouldn’t have worn his uniform if he had been suspended.
This claim was directly contradicted by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar.
In a statement on the NCoS X page, Abubakar confirmed Anugwa’s suspension, effective September 26, and labelled Anugwa’s testimony as “gross misconduct” intended to mislead the public.
HURIWA insisted Anugwa’s false testimony under oath constitutes perjury and should be met with parliamentary censure and further sanctions.
The organisation stressed the importance of upholding the sanctity of oaths during parliamentary hearings to maintain the legal authority of the National Assembly.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, warned that overlooking such acts of alleged perjury would set a dangerous precedent, effectively institutionalising impunity and undermining the rule of law.
