Catholic priest freed after 11-day abduction ordeal
The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the release of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, a Catholic seminary rector, who was freed from his captors on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
According to a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, Director of Communications for the diocese, Oyode was released around 7:00 p.m. near a village close to Ajaokuta in Kogi State.
Oyode had been abducted on October 27, 2024, when gunmen stormed the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi-Agenebode, Etsako East Local Council of Edo State, interrupting evening prayers and Benediction observed by priests and seminarians.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, expressed gratitude for the support received throughout the ordeal.
He extended thanks to the Catholic faithful within and beyond the diocese, Nigerians nationwide, friends and well-wishers globally, security agencies, vigilante groups, and hunters who laboured continuously to locate Oyode.
The bishop also called on government authorities to address the deteriorating security situation in Edo North Senatorial District and Edo State.
He urged officials to implement measures to restore peace and allow residents to live securely in their homes, farms and while travelling.
