The family of Henry Obasi, a young man allegedly shot dead by police officers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is demanding justice.

The tragic incident occurred on September 15, 2023, around 9:20 p.m. on Iwofe Road, near Saint John’s Catholic Church in Obio Akpor Local Council.

Eyewitnesses report that Obasi was followed and shot while returning home from work.

Police operatives later removed his body from the scene.

The local community, shocked by the senseless killing, is calling for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

A resident and colleague of the deceased, speaking anonymously, revealed that Henry and his elder brother, Solomon Obasi, had received threats from a dangerous gang months before the incident. The gang had allegedly assaulted and nearly killed Solomon, forcing the brothers to leave the city.

The resident suspects the same gang may be behind Henry’s murder, suggesting it could be a case of mistaken identity or a warning meant for Solomon.

“Henry was a kind soul and a dedicated worker. He was loved by everyone at our workplace. He didn’t deserve to die like this,” the resident said.

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation to apprehend and prosecute the killers.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP), assured the public that the command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
