FRSC launches ‘-ember’ safety campaign, urges passengers to protest reckless driving
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rivers Sector Command, has initiated its 2024 ‘-Ember’ Months Safety Campaign, urging passengers to challenge dangerous driving actively.
The campaign, “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers,” was introduced by Sector Commander Inyang Umoh, who underscored that road safety demands collective responsibility and encouraged passengers to report life-threatening traffic violations.
Umoh highlighted that passengers are entitled to a safe journey and should speak up against reckless driving, stressing, “Passengers must remain vigilant without distracting the driver, ensuring a safe trip for all.”
The campaign aims to reduce road traffic accidents during the busy ember months through intensified public awareness, strict traffic law enforcement, and collaboration with key stakeholders, including traditional leaders, transport unions, and media outlets.
In response to common beliefs that the September to December period is marked by supernatural causes of accidents, Umoh dismissed such notions, attributing the rise in crashes to human factors.
“Increased accidents result from human actions—such as speeding, overloading, distracted driving, and ignoring traffic laws—not supernatural forces,” he stated.
He urged stakeholders in the transport sector to collaborate with the FRSC to enhance road safety. He assured the public that FRSC officials would maintain a fair, firm approach to upholding traffic regulations.
“Everyone must take proactive steps to foster safety, not fear, on our roads.”
The repercussions of neglecting these measures will be severe,” Umoh warned.
