Kogi gov holds emergency meeting after alleged killing sparks tension
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State convened an emergency security meeting yesterday to address rising tensions between residents of Isanlu and Fulani settlers following the alleged killing of a Fulani individual by community members.
The meeting, held in Lokoja, brought together community leaders, Fulani representatives, and security officials to discuss the incident and prevent potential reprisal attacks.
In a statement released after the meeting, Information and Communications Commissioner Kingsley Fanwo said the governor, who cut short a trip to Abuja to address the situation, condemned the killing and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The governor frowned at a situation where people would take laws into their hands by killing fellow humans,” Fanwo stated. “He has directed that some traditional rulers in the affected areas be properly interrogated… and has also directed that a particular traditional ruler be suspended due to his role in the saga.”
Ododo urged Isanlu community leaders to warn residents against actions that threaten security and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in identifying and apprehending criminals. He also commended the Fulani community for their restraint and commitment to peace.
The meeting was attended by top government officials, security agencies, community leaders, and representatives of the Fulani community.
Local council chairman Dare Joshua expressed gratitude to the governor for his swift action in averting a major security crisis.
