The Niger State Government has conditionally lifted the ban on mining activities across the state.

Acting Governor Yakubu Garba made the announcement while inaugurating the 18-man task force on illegal mining to tackle environmental degradation.

The event was held at the council chamber, Government House, Minna, on Monday, August 26, 2024.

Garba noted that since the inception of the administration, the government has been concerned about the illegal mining activities occurring in different parts of the state. Despite government efforts to combat the menace, compliance has remained low.

The Acting Governor stressed that the mining industry is crucial for economic growth, but illegal mining has negatively impacted the environment, prompting the government to suspend its activities months ago.

“We are confident that the task force will enforce regulations by ensuring responsible mining practices across the state, and we promise to fully support them.

“To you, the selected members of the committee, we entrust you with significant responsibilities to protect our environment, to show fairness and just practices, and to secure Niger State’s future,” Garba said.

He disclosed that records indicate there are 880 registered mining companies in the state, comprising 578 companies and 302 cooperatives, but only 261 have reported to the Ministry of Mineral Resources for profiling.

The terms of reference for the task force include monitoring, identifying, and reporting illegal mining sites in Niger State; monitoring, identifying, and reporting child labour at mining sites; and reporting security challenges in mining host communities.

Additionally, the task force will identify the types of mineral titles held by companies, determine compliance with mining laws, and examine other matters related to the successful implementation of their assignments.

“Our collective efforts will define Niger State’s future. We can ensure that our mineral resources are harnessed for the greater good, creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and improving our communities’ quality of life.”

The Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Task Force, Alh. Abubakar Usman, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and pledged to work diligently to meet the terms of reference and deliver the desired outcomes.

The Task Force includes the SSG as Chairman, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Alh. Sabo Yahaya as Co-Chairman, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mohammed Yunusa Nahauni, as Secretary.

Other members include the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Commissioner of Police, Director of DSS, Commandant of NSCDC, Commandant of Vigilante, all 25 Council Chairmen, Secretaries of all 8 Emirate Councils, and representatives from the State Assembly and Judiciary.
