The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the tragic death of Esu Ema, a final-year student from the Department of Foreign Languages.

According to a statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, Ema, whose matriculation number was FRM/2019/041, was fatally struck by a speeding Lexus car with plate number ABJ 427 LQ, driven by one Lasisi Sodiq.

The incident occurred near the campus gate while Ema was reportedly on her way to submit her final-year project.

The accident took place on the Ife–Ibadan Road, close to the university’s main entrance.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) responded, recovering Ema’s body and depositing it at the mortuary of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) Complex around 12:35 pm. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police have arrested the driver for further investigation.

In a message conveyed through the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Adeolu Odedire, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased.

“It is devastating to lose a loved one, especially a child with so much promise. The death of a final year student is particularly heartbreaking,” Bamire said.

He urged the family, friends, and classmates of the late student to take solace in God and prayed for strength to bear the irreparable loss.
