Over 230 healthcare facilities destroyed in Borno
The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Hon. Umar Kadafur, has said over 230 healthcare facilities have been destroyed in the state.
He disclosed this today in Lagos during the 10th Anniversary and Investiture of the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy (NAPHARM), themed “Healthcare Transformation & National Development.”
Representing Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum, who was honoured as a fellow of the academy, Kadafur stated ongoing challenges in Borno’s healthcare sector due to the insurgency by Boko Haram.
He said, “The Borno State has lost over 230 healthcare facilities that were destroyed in the past 10 years during the insurgency. But we are still determined to make sure we give the best in the medical sector.
“We are trying as much as we can to rebuild all these clinics and provide the best that we can so that our people can access primary medical services at the local level, and also nutritional support for children and mothers.”
He added that the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP) have provided nutritional support to malnourished children and pregnant or lactating women.
“On mental health and psychosocial support, given the trauma experienced by the residents of Borno State due to prolonged conflicts, the WHO, with the assistance of local NGOs, has initiated mental health and psychosocial support programmes,” he added.
