Pro-Wike lawmakers to commemorate attacks on legislature Oct 29

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, has designated October 29 as a day to commemorate what it described as the “unprovoked attacks on the legislature” following the burning down of its hallowed chamber 386 days ago.
This decision was made at the Assembly’s 68th Legislative Sitting on Monday.
The House Leader, Major Jack, drew attention to the sad events, particularly the burning down of the Chamber by arsonists on October 29, 2023.
The Speaker, Amaewhule, expressed frustration that no convictions have been made despite the passage of time.
He also condemned the demolition of the Assembly Complex by Governor Siminialayi Fubara on December 13, 2023, without the knowledge and approval of the House, describing it as a brutal attack on democracy.
Amaewhule said: “It has been 386 days since the heartless burning down of the hallowed Chamber of the House, yet no conviction has been made.”
Consequently, the lawmakers resolved to set aside every October 29 as a solemn day to remember the malicious attacks on the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The move is said to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the legislature and its members in upholding democracy.
Meanwhile, in another development, the lawmakers directed Julius Berger Plc to repair the collapsed sections of alternative routes to the Port Harcourt Ring-Road.
The directive follows a report by the House Committee on Works, which commended the committee for its detailed findings.
Members urged the committee to follow up on the matter to ensure the execution of the Port Harcourt Ring-Road project stays on course.
The Assembly emphasized the need for synergy between the contracting firm and the committee to fix the collapsed sections of the designated alternative routes.
The resolution, they said, demonstrates their commitment to addressing the state’s infrastructure challenges and ensuring the completion of critical projects.
