Wealthy Nigerians urged to consider plights of orphans, widows at Christmas
Charity group under the auspices of Sunday and Omoikhere Oriaran Foundation (SOOF) has appealed to wealthy Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of humanitarianism and reach out to the poor and vulnerable groups in society during the Christmas season.
Founder of SOOF, Dr Rose Oriaran, who made this call in Abuja during the foundation’s end-of-year Humanitarian Outreach, stressed the need for the state to also pay attention to the health conditions of the poor and vulnerable in society.
Disclosing that the foundation was set up in memory of their parents, who were also into humanitarian activities, Oriaran noted that the group has set out over 1000 bags of rice, pastries, and wrappers among others for distribution to orphans widows, and other vulnerable groups across the country.
“The foundation was set up in memory of our parents, who were also into humanitarian activities. They were very good philanthropists and while they were alive, they always made an impact wherever they found themselves, especially in the lives of the needy, orphans, and widows in the society,” she said.
“And we just thought that we have to keep on their legacies to do everything we can as a family to ensure that their legacy is continued.
Lamenting the large number of vulnerable groups that are hungry in the country, she noted that most orphans and widows do not even know where to get their next meal.
“And some of these orphans and widows, they don’t even know where their next meal will come from. And we thought that while we are making merry, we should also remember this set of people, bring them out, let them have fun, and give them what we think will make them happy.
“At least one good wrapper for the widows, school supplies for the children, many of the children in the orphanages, and those who are also vulnerable at home.
“We will also get them school supplies, school books, bags, and just try to try to make a little difference in the lives of this set of people.
“We have hungry vulnerable people all over the place, so if you have more than what you need to eat, you can just give to your neighbor. I use this opportunity to call on people who have you might not be a millionaire to be charitable. You don’t need to have all the world to be a humanitarian.
“You have something to eat. Your neighbor is not eating. Bring out that food you have and share with your neighbor, and everybody got so happy. I use this medium to call on all those who can to develop and imbibe that spirit of humanitarianism.”
