The federal government has restated its resolve to hit the target of 6000 megawatts of electricity by the end of 2024.

The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, stated this while on a working tour of Calabar Generation Company, a subsidiary of Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), yesterday in Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State.

He said the federal government is currently distributing 5,100 MW but is targeting 6,000 MW by the end of the year.

According to Adelabu, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to use power to drive other critical sectors of the economy.

He assured Nigerians that before the end of 2024, there will be a remarkable improvement in power supply in Nigeria.

In his words, the minister said, “We have witnessed an increase in power generation in the last few months. We have hit 5,105 megawatts, which is the highest in the past years. The federal government is targeting 6,000 MW by the end of 2024.”

“From the average of 4,000 megawatts, which is about a 25 percent increase that this administration met. This is commendable.”

“And what I can promise Nigerians again is that we are still scratching the surface; by the time we take the giant steps that are expected of us, you will see even more improvement in power supply under President Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, in his agenda to use power to drive every other critical sector of the economy,” he assured.

“More improvement will be witnessed next year by consumers. We are doing everything humanly possible to enhance the state of transmission.”

He added, “While the Discos, distribution companies, are also raising their game, their own infrastructures, such as the 33kVA lines, all the duty transformers, we are still scratching the surface.”

“What you are seeing here today is a tip of the iceberg. We are raising our game to fall in line with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda to use power to drive every sector of the economy, and we must rise to the challenge,” the minister maintained.

He said his visit was to encourage the power generators to improve on their services as expected by the federal government.

In his remarks, the Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka Williams, commended the federal government for assuring the state of its commitment to improving electricity.

He, however, urged residents of the state not to hesitate to report anyone caught vandalising the infrastructure of Power Holding Companies, in the eventuality of failing to confront the vandals.

He also assured the Minister of the state government’s partnership in ensuring that the power sector achieves its set goals.
