Flooding: Tinubu grieves over deaths, people displacement, farmland loss
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday expressed grief over the havoc wreaked by floods on communities and farmlands across the country.
Recent data by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) indicate that lives have been lost, with thousands of hectares of farmlands damaged and thousands of people displaced by floods across the country.
The President also sympathised with all victims of these ravages of nature, especially bereaved families, farmers, displaced communities, and those who have lost property.
Recall that the floods have also washed away thousands of hectares of farmlands, compounding an already dire food security situation caused by widespread insecurity.
The floods have already killed more than 170 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more in the country this year.
According to the latest tally on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) tracker, some 170 people have died and some 205,000 have been displaced by flooding in 28 states.
Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, and Jigawa states are the most impacted.
The flooding has been caused by unprecedented rainfall and the rising Niger and Benue rivers. Officials worry that more bad weather may be ahead.
President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, re-emphasized the need for a concerted effort to address existential environmental concerns and build a more climate-resilient and adaptive society.
The President prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased while assuring Nigerians that his administration, through the relevant agencies, will continue to provide the needed support for victims as well as timely warnings to mitigate the impact of environmental mishaps.
