University of Ibadan (UI) medical students studying within the premises of the University College Hospital (UCH) staged another protest on Thursday, vowing to continue protesting until their hostels located inside UCH are reconnected.
The students also challenged IBEDC over the disconnection of their halls of residence.
The power company had disconnected the UCH and halls of residence of medical students located within the UCH facility.
Also, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had a tripartite meeting with the management of UCH with IBEDC on Monday, where he assured that light would be restored to the hospital between 24 hours and 48 hours.
The power was restored to the hospital on Wednesday, but the power of Ayo Falase Hostel and Alexandra Brown Halls was not connected.
Some representatives of the medical students who spoke with journalists expressed their displeasure over the exclusion.
A student’s leader and House Secretary, Daniel Elemide, said, ‘We are here to protest the blackout for over 100 days.
“Power has been connected to the UCH complex, but our hostels, which are Ayo Falase Hostel and Alexandra Brown hall have not been connected. We will continue with the protest until the power is restored to the hostels of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan,” he said.
One of the spokespersons of the students, Covenant Odedele, said, ”We are here to add our voices to the fact that there is power disconnection in this hospital complex.
“There was partial restoration of power. Power was restored to the hospital but not our hostels. The college told us they were working on it.”
Meanwhile, the Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde, Victor Olojede, said this issue of epileptic power supply at the UCH is an exclusive matter that requires the Federal government’s intervention.
He appealed to the Minister of Power and concerned authority to ensure power is restored to the students’ hall of residence.
