Refugee commission fetes IDPs communities in FCT
.To provide health care access, shelter
National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, (NCFRMI), has reached out to communities of Internally Displaced Persons, (IDPs), with relief materials such as food, educational materials and other welfare packages to better their living conditions and ease their difficulty.
Newly appointed Federal Commission, NCFRMI, Aliyu Ahmed, said the Commission will continue to extend helping hands to IDPs and work towards ensuring they are provided decent shelters and settlement towards their reintegration and living normal lives.
He made this known while visiting key IDPs camps in the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), consisting Durumi, Wassa and New Karshi IDPs camps to commemorate Nigeria’s 63rd independence..
The Commissioner noted key challenges facing the camps to.include access to healthcare, education especially for the large population of children among others
He said “As our nation: celebrates its 63rd Independence Day, we renew our unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
“Our resolve is clear: no one, regardless of their gender, age, or vulnerabilities, should be left without vital support, echoing the President’s renewed Hope Agenda.
“The importance: of providing assistance to IDPs cannot be overstated. Neglecting those in displacement can have profound social and economic consequences for both the displaced and their host communities.
“In the face of protracted displacement crises that often affect IDPs, ensuring
access to assistance during such times is of utmost importance.”
Ahmed who witness the health plight of IDPs in Wassa camp as brought forward by their leaders, pledge to establish health facilities in the camps and as soon as possible. He also said he will make readily available one million naira for immediate treatment of those in dire health straits.
Chairman of Wassa IDPs camp, Joffrey Bitrus, while appreciating the Commissioner and his team for their intervention, points that his community is faced with serious challenges ranging from health, education, food shortages and serious accomodation issues among others .
He pleaded with the visiting team to as a matter of urgency continue to look into health care provision for IDPs and provide them with education for their children and basic skills and tools to boost their living conditions.
“Many parents here cannot afford to buy these educational materials for their children but with the support we have got, we will ensure that we share these books, bags and all these learning materials to the children in our Transitional Learning Center, ( TLC).
“It has been quite a while since anyone has remembered us and we though maybe it is because we are located very far away from the city but this visit has given us hope especially for those of us who are very sick and incapacitated as we have give up on any help coming out way despite our displacement from our various homes,” he said
Also, Chairman of New Karshi IDP, said many of them were displaced from Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
According to him, the relief materials such as and we also take the data of all our members and others that are coming to join us due to security concerns and to be sure that we look after each other.
“We have 563 households and 2, 116 children and about 620 of them are going to school but the others are not going to school due to some certain challenges. These items brought to us by the refugee commission, we will support children that need books and bag, we will see that those children that don’t have the means to go to school, can now do so,” he explains.
Items provided to the camps consist 97 bags of 25Kg rice, Spaghetti, and Semovita, 20 cartons of Vegetable oil, cartoons of seasoning, customised exercise books, school sandals, white boards and school bags.
Others are biros, pencils, school chairs and tables, farming tools such as spraying machines, power generating set, irrigation pump, pesticides and herbicides.
