Reps calls for Improved funding, modern equipment for NEMA
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to provide better funding and procure modern equipment for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to improve its response to cases of emergency across the country.
Member representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency, Joseph Bassey, who is the Chairman House Committee on Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness, made this call during NEMA’s budget defense by the agency’s Director General at the National Assembly in Abuja.
He emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness, saying it’s vital to safeguarding lives and property.
“Disaster preparedness and mitigation are vital to safeguarding lives and properties, and as the saying goes, “When you refuse to plan, you have planned to fail.” He said.
Bassey highlighted NEMA’s vital role in disaster management, added that the agency needs sufficient funding and resources to function effectively. He called on the government to prioritize proactive disaster management rather than relying on post-disaster relief efforts.
He also pointed out the urgent need for NEMA to acquire air and land ambulances, as well as other modern equipment, to enhance its operations.
“NEMA requires sufficient funding and resources to effectively prevent and respond to disasters. The federal government must prioritize disaster management, not just react with palliative measures after a disaster strikes. NEMA urgently needs air and land ambulance.” He said.
