As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence anniversary today, citizens across the nation are both celebrating and reflecting on the country’s journey since 1960.

In a message to the nation, Prof. Chris Imumolen, a prominent voice in Nigerian affairs, emphasised the need for both national reflection and collective renewal.

The anniversary, a symbol of the nation’s quest for self-determination, offers Nigerians an opportunity to celebrate their resilience and cultural diversity. However, Imumolen stressed that while there are achievements to be proud of, Nigerians must face the hard realities that confront them today: high unemployment, rising inflation, fluctuating exchange rates, and the increased cost of living.

In a message directed to the general populace, Imumolen offered words of encouragement, reminding Nigerians that tough times do not last. “Our history as a nation is a testament to our ability to weather storms and emerge stronger,” he said, urging the youth to continue innovating and adding value to the economy, particularly through entrepreneurship and small businesses.

He also noted Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential, urging a shift toward self-sufficiency by leveraging local resources. “Our land is rich with resources, and we must create an industrial revolution within our borders by supporting local industries and promoting ‘Made in Nigeria’ products,” he said.

Imumolen did not shy away from offering direct counsel to the nation’s leaders, focusing on urgent issues that need immediate attention.

He called for greater government investment in skill development and entrepreneurship, particularly to empower Nigeria’s youth, who remain a vital part of the economy.

With fluctuating exchange rates causing uncertainty for businesses, Imumolen called for sound economic policies that would restore confidence in the Naira and attract foreign investment.

Acknowledging the impact of fuel subsidy removal, he urged the government to reinvest any savings from the reforms into infrastructure, renewable energy, and social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable.

As more Nigerians fall into poverty due to rising costs, Imumolen urged the government to prioritize food security and affordable housing initiatives.

Prof. Imumolen issued a call for unity and national action, urging Nigerians to rise above divisions based on tribe, religion, or politics. He called for decisive leadership from the government and reminded Nigerians that their resilience and creativity are the nation’s greatest resources.

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th year of independence, the call for both reflection and action resonates strongly. Nigerians are hopeful, but as Imumolen noted, the road ahead requires bold decisions and collective unity to achieve the Nigeria of their dreams.

“God bless Nigeria,” he concluded.
