The Managing Director, Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Dr Abayomi Ajayi, has said deployment of Non-invasive Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (NiPGT-A ) to assesses the chromosomal makeup of embryos helps improve Invitro Fertilization, (IVF) outcomes.

According to him, the technique reduces potential risks associated with traditional biopsy procedures, making it much safer and more accurate.
He said it is the reason Nordica Fertility Centre is being introduced in Nigeria after being certified to do so.

Ajayi said NiPGT-A can be successfully utilised to examine embryos without removing cells for biopsy, ultimately reducing the risk of implantation failure, and recurrent miscarriage, among others.

He added that by examining the culture medium surrounding the embryo, which contains shed fetal DNA, instead of taking cells directly from the embryo, it is possible to determine the embryo’s chromosomal health and identify any potential abnormalities.

According to him, NiPGT-A enhances outcomes for IVF procedures and that individuals and couples in Lagos and environs facing infertility challenges can enjoy its benefits.

“NiPGT-A analyses the culture medium surrounding the embryo, which contains shed fetal DNA, instead of taking cells directly from the embryo. By examining this DNA, it is possible to assess the embryo’s chromosomal health and identify any potential abnormalities.

“The advantages are the same worldwide, but cost is one thing that is very important in this part of the world. So, we believe that this is going to reduce costs. But why do people do IVF in the first place? It’s for them to get babies. It’s also going to improve the success rate of IVF because we’ll be able to select embryos that are most likely to become babies.

“Reduce the time to pregnancy when you do IVF, when we can choose the best embryos for you, and now the cost is even reduced, and then, of course, the limited risk to embryos, also, that it is not likely that there is any embryo damage, because there is nothing invasive being done with embryos.”
