Nnewi Youth unveils initiative to tackle unemployment, unveils empowerment program
As a move to tackle youth unemployment and foster vocational skills development, the Nnewi Youth Forum has initiated a program titled Nnewi Youth Sustainable Empowerment Scheme.
The Founder, IYCON Foundation,
Chief Ifeanyi Ekwulugwo, will be the benefactor and Anglican Diocese of Nnewi (ADON) Vocational and Technical Academy serving as tutor.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was officially signed yesterday, with a total of N250 million empowerment program unveiled.
This initiative aims to equip young people with practical skills and entrepreneurial opportunities to drive self-reliance and economic growth in the region.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government, Echezona Anazodo praised the initiative.
He noted that the initiative is a transformative step in youth empowerment.
He expressed gratitude to the IYCON Foundation for its investment in the future of Nnewi’s youth and pledged the local government’s support to ensure the program’s success.
He also hinted at additional plans by the local government to further empower the youth of Nnewi North.
Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, reiterated the church’s commitment to youth development.
According to him, “Empowering the youth has been my long-standing vision. I am excited for the establishment of a voocational training center for skill acquisition and rehabilitation.
“I commends the IYCON Foundation for complementing these efforts along with the challenges of sustaining the program.
“I also want to thank the Anambra State Government, for its efforts to combat crime. Initiatives like this provide viable alternatives to criminal activities by offering young people opportunities for self-reliance.”
The program, which will run for five years, is set to open its online application platform today.
Under the partnership, successful applicants will gain admission into ADON Vocational and Technical Academy, where they will receive six months of training in various fields, including electrical/electronics, automobile technology, building technology, catering, and more.
Outstanding participants will be awarded a ₦1 million grant to support their entrepreneurial ventures upon completion of the program. The IYCON Foundation will fund the initiative, while ADON Vocational will provide the structured training with Nnewi Youth Forum serving as cordinator.
The program is expected to significantly reduce youth unemployment and crime rates in Nnewi by equipping participants with marketable skills and resources to establish sustainable businesses.
Similarly, the President of Nnewi Youth Forum, Ejim Ucheagwu expressed gratitude to God for the actualization of his vision of having the youths of Nnewi empowered while expressing deep appreciation to IYCON Foundation for providing the funds and to the Anglican Diocese of Nnewi through ADON VOTECH for the partnership.
