Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, marked his 65th birthday by sponsoring free surgeries for 65 children in Lagos.

The initiative, held at Mother Mary Hospital, Isolo, culminated in a follow-up clinic and appreciation programme where parents expressed gratitude over the improvement in their children’s health.

Obi disclosed the development in a message shared on his X account, saying he was grateful to God for the successful completion of the medical intervention and the safe recovery of the children.

The surgeries, led by Dr Folaseye Adebayo, included adenotonsillectomy and other procedures to address serious health challenges affecting the children.

Adenotonsillectomy is commonly performed to remove enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which can contribute to breathing difficulties, recurrent infections and sleep-related problems.

At the appreciation event, parents recounted how the surgeries had improved their children’s health and quality of life.

Obi said the initiative was his way of using his birthday to give back to society rather than simply celebrating the occasion.

He expressed appreciation to the medical team, hospital management, and others who contributed to the programme’s success.

The former governor described the initiative as an opportunity to celebrate life by helping children regain their health and hope.
