Ododo suspends mining activities in Kogi over banditry
The Kogi State Government has suspended all mining activities in the state, citing an influx of bandits and negative elements involved in mining-related activities.
The suspension was announced on Wednesday after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Usman Ododo.
Speaking to journalists following the meeting, the state Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashiru Gegu, explained that the state ministry will begin profiling legal mining companies operating in the region.
“This is to enable the state to have genuine mining data. A total clean-up of the sector will go a long way in minimising or eradicating criminalities in totality,” Gegu said.
He said that the government will work according to established regulations and collaborate with Federal Mines Officers and security agencies.
“The state will not condone any form of infiltration or illegal activities,” he added.
Gegu also urged mining companies to cooperate with the state during the suspension, stressing the importance of addressing security challenges.
He further implored all mining companies to bear with the state during this period.
