Ahead of its January 2025 election, the apex Igbo cultural group, the Chidi Ibeh faction of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, set up an 11-man electoral committee headed by Dr. Richard Ozobu and Prof. Chibuikeya Achoakawa as Secretary to oversee the election of a new executive of the group.

The decision, according to the group, follows an influential meeting convened by the Ohanaeze Elders Council and Imeobi members in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The group maintained that the collective commitment was reinforced by its decisions toward upholding and enriching the Ohanaeze’s Constitution, adding that the Igbo group faction is embarking on a new era of leadership unity and cultural integrity.

In a statement by the Secretary General of the faction of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in Abakaliki, the group noted that this pivotal initiative is geared towards ensuring a seamless transition of leadership from Imo State to Rivers State by January 2025.

While expressing confidence in the calibre of personalities that made up the electoral committee, he added that the Igbo group is privileged to have Dr. Richard Ozobu at the helm of the committee. He noted that he will bring his array of credentials to his leadership role.

MEANWHILE, the South-South Youth Wing of Ohanaeze has backed former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, to become Ohanaeze’s President-General when Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu completes the tenure of late Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

The coordinator of Ohanaeze Youth Wing, South-South zone, Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Owerri yesterday. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Chukwu, whose tenure will end on January 10, 2025, was appointed to lead the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization following the death of Iwuanyanwu.

The Imo Chapter of Ohanaeze, led by Mr. C J Ihemedu, presented Chukwu to the Imeobi Ohanaeze to complete the four year-tenure allotted to Imo, which was truncated by the deaths of Prof. George Obiozor in 2022 and Iwuanyanwu in 2024.

Arthur-Ugwa said that with the ceding of PG to Rivers, the South-South youths of Ohanaeze found it most appropriate to back Okiro, whom he described as “eminently qualified for the coveted position.”

He said that youths of the South-South, having understudied Okiro’s precedence, considered him as the round peg for the round hole, and would readily support his emergence.
