The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed sadness over the fuel tanker incident that occurred on Saturday morning at Ugwu Onyeama, in Udi Local Council of Enugu State.

Scores were reportedly burnt to death, including women and children in the incident. The council blamed the incident on a failed government, citing the lack of proper infrastructure and safety measures on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

In a statement issued, yesterday, by the National President of the Ohanaeze Youth Congress (OYC), Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, the group called on President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to expedite the completion of the second lane of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway at the 9th Mile axis.

The council also urged the governors of the South-East zone to sign an executive order banning the movement of heavy-duty vehicles during the day, citing the narrow roads in the region as a major factor in these tragic incidents.

The statement read: “This incident is not an isolated one, as there have been previous accidents on the same expressway.

“The OYC has vowed to continue advocating for better infrastructure in the South-East, particularly in the areas of road construction, transportation, and public utilities.

“We demand that the government prioritises the development of Igbo land, addressing the decayed infrastructure, and provide a conducive environment for the people of the region to thrive.

MEANWHILE, the Enugu chapter of the parent body of OYC Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said the Governor Peter Mbah-led administration has ended the ugly reign of “unknown gunmen,” as well as the regular Monday sit-at-home.

Recall that Mbah had, in his first executive orders upon assumption office, declared that the regular sit-at-home observed on Mondays would no longer be tolerated.

The government’s action has seen normal activities return to the coal city state on Mondays. In a statement yesterday, signed by the President of Ohanaeze, Enugu State chapter, and the Secretary, Dr. Okey Adenyi and Bonaventure Onuh, respectively, they urged the public to ignore claims made by OYC.The group said the statement urging Mbah to prioritise security was ill-conceived and aimed at nothing other than clout chasing.
