PalmPay has called for increased public awareness and collaboration among stakeholders to combat cybercrime, warning that customer education remains critical to preventing digital fraud as online threats become more sophisticated.
The fintech company made the call during the 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness Walk organised by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja on October 17, where it participated for the second consecutive year.
The walk formed part of a three-day programme themed, “Towards a Resilient Cyberspace,” aimed at raising public awareness of cyber threats and promoting safer online practices.
Speaking at the event, Managing Director of PalmPay Nigeria, Chika Nwosu, said the growing sophistication of cyber threats, including phishing and social engineering, made continuous public sensitisation necessary to protect users of digital financial services.
He said collaboration between law enforcement agencies, fintech operators and customers was essential to building a safer digital ecosystem.
“Our continued participation reflects our commitment to combating cybercrime and promoting a safer digital space for Nigerians. As cyber threats such as phishing and social engineering become increasingly sophisticated, equipping people with the knowledge and tools to recognise and prevent fraud is more important than ever,” Nwosu said.
He noted that while technology and security systems remained important in preventing fraud, their effectiveness depended partly on customers’ ability to identify suspicious activities and adopt safe digital practices.
According to him, PalmPay’s PalmPay Dey For You campaign is designed to educate customers on recognising scams, using official customer support channels and keeping their personal security details confidential.
He urged customers to protect their personal identification numbers (PINs), passwords and one-time passwords (OTPs) from unauthorised access.
“By strengthening security measures with our robust digital security systems and raising awareness, we can reduce vulnerabilities and create a digital ecosystem that inspires greater trust and adoption,” he added.
Also speaking, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, said the campaign reflected the Inspector-General of Police’s commitment to a comprehensive approach to internal security through public sensitisation, stakeholder collaboration and preventive measures.
He urged Nigerians to embrace the campaign’s message: “Think Before You Click and Verify Before You Share.”
The message highlights the need for internet users to exercise caution when opening links, responding to unsolicited messages or sharing information online, particularly where financial transactions and personal data are involved.
As part of its customer protection efforts, PalmPay is also encouraging users to explore the security features available in the app’s Security Centre and take proactive steps to safeguard their accounts.
The company said its fraud-prevention initiatives were focused on promoting secure digital financial practices and helping customers transact with greater confidence.
The renewed call for cybersecurity awareness comes as digital financial services continue to expand, making public education, responsible online behaviour and cooperation between financial service providers and law enforcement agencies important elements in efforts to curb cybercrime
