The Eagle Watch for Good Governance (EWGG) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reward an ex-Niger Delta agitator, Oweizidei Thomas Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, with a national honour in recognition of his selfless service to the nation.
Speaking to newsmen in Asaba, the Delta State capital, EWGG’s National Coordinator, Mr. Cletus Kwalekeme, said Tompolo is qualified for a national honour following the relentless efforts of his Tantita firm to secure oil facilities and the waterways in the Niger Delta region, which has boosted the nation’s oil production capacity.
He said Tompolo has been fighting illegal oil bunkering in the high sea for years, appealing to President Tinubu to do the needful by encouraging Tompolo to do more.
Kwalekeme also called on the President to create what he called a Joint Taskforce Barrack in the Niger Delta region like the Abacha Barrack in Abuja to provide roads that would connect all the oil facilities in the region.
He said the JTF should be sited in the upshore area in Bayelsa State, claiming that the state has a vast acre of land between Ndoro, Agoro and Pretoru.
He applauded President Tinubu for scrapping the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and replacing it with the Ministry of Regional Affairs to integrate other development commissions in the country for effective service delivery.
Speaking further, Kwalekeme appealed for the immediate re-absorption of sacked military personnel with minor offences into the army to assist in tackling terrorism in the country.
He noted that the sacked military personnel with minor offences should be re-absorbed to face the terrorists and other criminal elements in the country, having had years of training as soldiers, instead of engaging new recruits and organising fresh training for them.
He warned that such sacked erring military personnel could affect the society negatively as they may lure other individuals into crime and thereby compound the war against insecurity and other crimes in the country.
Kwalekeme, therefore, urged the Federal Government to effectively strengthen all the security architecture, including the military and the Police, by training and equipping them with the required knowledge and sophisticated weapons to confront insecurity in all parts of the country.
