Describe it as false, misleading, malicious
The Imo State Police Command has dismissed reports in online media alleging that there was an attack on the Imo State Correctional Centre, saying that it was false, misleading, malicious and handiwork of mischief makers.
A suspect, responsible for peddling such false information has been arrested. Residents of Owerri scampered for safety, yesterday, over sporadic shootings in the city. There were unconfirmed reports that hoodlums took advantage of the day to attack.
However, a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Command, Henry Okoye, said: “The Imo State Police Command is issuing this statement in response to a publication making the rounds on social media that the Correctional Service Custodial Centre, Owerri was attacked by gunmen today, July 31, 2024.
“The Command wishes to state clearly that the said publication is entirely false, misleading and malicious. The publication is a calculated attempt by mischief makers to create unnecessary fear and anxiety in residents of Imo State.” The Police said there was a massive deployment of personnel at all nooks and crannies of the city to forestall any possible attack by hoodlums or miscreants.
“We wish to inform Imo people that operatives of the entire security agencies have been massively deployed to all the nooks and crannies of the state, including the correctional centre to avoid any threat of attack,” the statement said.
