Operatives of the Delta State Police Command yesterday stormed a suspected kidnappers’ hideout in Agbarho town, Ughelli, killing three suspects in the process.

The deceased were reportedly responsible for the deaths of two police officers and a driver, Mr David Imela, during a foiled kidnap attempt on the wife of a Delta State House of Assembly member on September 2.

The incident occurred at Okoloba Junction, Jakpa Road, Uvwie council area. Confirming the operation, command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, stated that Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, was deeply troubled by the previous incident and immediately ordered a robust deployment of police personnel around Warri and its surrounding areas. This included strategic roadblocks and the closure of all potential escape routes.

“Following the CP’s order, police operatives from Ebrumede division, led by Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Iwok Ndifereke, strategically created an artificial traffic jam at the DSC roundabout,” Edafe explained. “They identified the suspects’ vehicle based on its description and registration number.”

“When the suspected kidnappers noticed the traffic and the presence of police officers, they opened fire on the team, who responded professionally, considering the busy nature of the area,” he continued.

A fierce gun battle ensued, with the officers ultimately overpowering the suspects. Three of the suspects sustained severe gunshot injuries, while others managed to escape.

“The hoodlums abandoned their bullet-ridden vehicle and fled with injuries,” Edafe added. “Three AK-47 rifles and their operational vehicle with registration number WWR-436-GZ were recovered.”

Determined to apprehend the remaining suspects, CP Abaniwonda instructed the DPO to pursue all leads and ensure their arrest.
