Commuters transiting in and out of Lagos Mainland-Ikorodu Road felt relief yesterday as the Lagos State government opened the newly rehabilitated Odo Iya Alaro Bridge.

The Guardian learned that the reopening was a significant step designed to ease the persistent gridlock in the area. Speaking at the event through the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the governor stated that the rehabilitation aligns with his administration’s commitment to ensuring adequate traffic management and ease of transportation in the state.

He reiterated that the government has continuously maintained road infrastructure and put it in good shape to benefit commuters within the state.

While confirming that the bridge is ready for public use, the governor urged citizens to work with the state government to protect the infrastructure. He also warned against removing the newly installed manhole covers, saying the government would prosecute anyone caught doing so. He said, “The newly replaced manholes are now made of fibres and not metals, so they are useless to whoever takes them.

Let the manholes be; they are there to protect human beings so that they don’t fall off the bridge; they are there for safety.” Hamzat commended all the stakeholders involved in the early completion of the bridge, as the rehabilitation works, which ought to have taken 90 days, were completed in 54 days.

He thanked the Office of Works, Infrastructure, Ministry of Transportation, the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), and others for a well-done job.
