Shettima praises Oba of Benin’s role in fostering unity
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has commended the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, for his role in promoting unity and upholding the revered culture built by his ancestors.
This was stated by the Vice-President’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, in a statement on Sunday.
Shettima spoke when he paid homage to the Oba of Benin at his palace during a visit to the city for the grand finale of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial campaign.
He described the Oba of Benin as a “living history” and praised his efforts in fostering peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria.
“You play a vital role in fostering peace, unity, and progress in our great nation. Your contribution to conflict resolution, promoting harmonious coexistence, and guiding our youth cannot be overstated.
“Your Imperial Majesty, you have demonstrated remarkable leadership. Please continue to uphold the rich traditions of your ancestors while embracing progress and development for your people.
“You are one of the most respected rulers in this country.
“Your efforts to promote Benin culture, foster unity among your people, and advocate for the return of stolen Benin artefacts have not gone unnoticed.
“The recent return of some of these treasures highlights your diplomatic prowess.
“It is a testament to the ingenuity, organization, and wisdom that have been the hallmarks of the Benin Kingdom for centuries.”

The Vice-President emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in Nigeria, assuring the Oba of the Federal Government’s unwavering support.
He noted that traditional rulers have played a crucial role in sustaining peace and preserving the culture of their people.
“I assure you of the federal government’s unwavering support for traditional institutions such as yours.
“Our administration recognizes the crucial role traditional rulers play as custodians of our cultural heritage and key stakeholders in national development,” he said.
Shettima also sought the royal father’s blessings for the APC governorship candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebhole, ahead of the Edo State governorship election on Sept. 21.
“Our party’s candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebhole, brings a vision of progress and development for Edo State, building on the state’s illustrious history.
“We believe that with your support and the collective will of the Edo people, we can usher in an era of unprecedented growth and prosperity for the state.”
In response, the Oba of Benin thanked the Vice-President for his visit and requested Federal Government support for the construction of the Benin Royal Museum.
He appreciated Shettima’s praise for the Benin culture and tradition, promising to continue preserving it.
