Wife of Anambra State Governor, Ninye Soludo, has facilitated the rescue and treatment of a six-year-old girl, whose father turned into an object of abuse.  It was gathered that the child was rescued by a group, Save and Secure the Child Initiative, set up to campaign against child abuse in Nigeria.

The six-year-old child, Chiagozie Nwobodo, was rescued from the hands of her father, who flogged her with a machete, thereby leaving the girl with multiple injuries all over her body and a broken leg.

Her father, a 44-year-old Hyginus Nwobodo, who hails from Ezinifite, in Nnewi South Local Council of the state, confessed to the heinous crime after he was handed over to the police by the men of the Ezinifite Vigilante Group.

In his confession, Nwobodo admitted he carried out the dastardly acts on her daughter due to her destructive tendencies, especially in the use of machete and metals to destroy his doors.

The six-year-old daughter, when interviewed, denied his father’s allegation. The father later blamed the devil for his actions. The Guardian learnt that when the child was brought to the hospital on emergency, the doctors on duty demanded payment of N300,000 as deposit before she could be taken to theatre for surgery on her fractured legs.

Luck, however, smiled at her when the news got to the governor’s wife, who visited the hospital to see the child, and thereafter asked that the child be treated as she would offset the bills. She also promised to ensure that the alleged culprit is prosecuted.

Speaking on the incident, Anambra State Principal of Save and Secure the Child Initiative, Kingsley Obi, condemned the incident, noting that the suspect would be charged to the Juvenile Court established by the state.

Obi advised the public against acts that could endanger the lives of their children, warning that no form of child’s ill-behavior should bring about such a form of abuse and maltreatment against children.

Also, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, frowned at the dastardly act, stressing that government would not tolerate any form of child abuse and molestation. Obinano affirmed the government’s commitment to arresting and facilitating the trial of anybody found wanting and guilty of such child battery.

“The fact that you’re a child’s parent does not give you the right to maltreat him or her anyhow. We don’t say that parents shouldn’t caution their child when they do the wrong thing, but that should be done moderately and carefully,” she said.
