Ten arrested, 50 trucks impounded in Kogi over illegal mining
Ten persons have been arrested and 50 trucks impounded by the Kogi government over illegal mining.
Speaking with pressmen on Monday, 18 December, 2023, Bashiru Gegu, commissioner of solid minerals and natural resources, said the arrest was carried out by the special task force on smuggling and related crimes.
Gegu said the arrest is in line with the governor’s directive on ban of illegal mining in the state.
“The defaulters shall be prosecuted accordingly, the action taken today is to send a message to defaulters that ‘Operation Stop Illegal Mining In Kogi’ is on course.
“We are working with the support of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes”
The Commissioner said over the years, they have asked miners in the state, who are approved by the federal government, to register with the state ministry of solid minerals and natural resources, but they always refused.
He advised illegal mining companies and individuals to cease further activities while appealing to residents to report any illegal activities in the state.
Chairman of the special task force, Friday Makama, reiterated the need for all miners to operate within the ambit of the law.
He said it is unfortunate that some set of individuals are milking Kogi of its natural resources.
