Tensions are high in Imo State as a two-day sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) takes effect today. Security forces have launched a series of “Show of Force” patrols in response to potential disruptions by IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

IPOB has urged residents across the Southeast to stay indoors and close businesses today and tomorrow in solidarity with their campaign for an independent Biafra nation. The group warned of consequences for those who defy the order.

The Imo State Police Command, however, is determined to maintain law and order. Spokesperson Henry Okoye urged residents to disregard the sit-at-home order and continue their normal activities without fear, assuring them of safety.

“We are conducting high-visibility patrols and intelligence-gathering operations to counter any threats posed by IPOB and ESN,” Okoye stated. He added that security personnel will be deployed throughout the period and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

This comes as the Imo State Police Command announced a significant breakthrough in its fight against IPOB. On October 19, officers raided a suspected IPOB/ESN camp in Nempi, Oru West, arresting 29 individuals allegedly linked to the group.

The operation stemmed from the earlier arrest of AnukuruNnana Emmanuel, whose confession led police to the camp. During the raid, officers recovered a cache of weapons, including pump-action guns, locally made pistols and revolvers, AK-47 magazines, and ammunition. A POS machine, over N200,000 in cash allegedly extorted from kidnap victims, and a white SUV were also seized.

“This operation demonstrates our commitment to dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace in Imo State,” Okoye asserted. He added that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to apprehend those manufacturing the locally-made firearms.

Commissioner of Police, CP AbokiDanjuma, thanked residents for their cooperation and reiterated the Command’s dedication to public safety. He called for a collective effort to maintain peace and stability in the region.
